Over the second half of the twentieth century, the average European’s buying power tripled, while working hours fell by a third. The European Economy since 1945 is a broad, accessible, forthright account of the extraordinary development of Europe’s economy since the end of World War II. ObjectWeb Participates in European Technology Platform as Founding

(PRWEB) September 10, 2005

ObjectWeb participates in NESSI (Networked European Software and Services Initiative) as a founding member. NESSI is a European technology platform created by leading players to develop a visionary strategy for software and services driven by a common European research agenda.

NESSI aims to provide a unified view for European research in service architectures and software infrastructures that will define technologies, strategies and deployment policies fostering new, open, industrial solutions and societal applications that enhance the safety, security and well-being of citizens.

NESSI puts special emphasis on software openness in general, and on open standards and open source in particular. One critical success factor stated in NESSI’s rationale is the capacity to embrace open source as a model to develop high quality software applications and services, both from an economic standpoint and from the developer / user standpoint.

“ObjectWeb has very a unique profile made of business neutrality, of know-how in federating innovation ecosystems and of proven ability to deliver industry grade open source middleware,” said Jean-Pierre Laisné, ObjectWeb Chairman of the Board and Linux & Open Source Initiative Manager with Bull. “Collaborative R&D via open source is bound to be central in the advent of a knowledge-based economy in Europe. ObjectWeb intends to be instrumental in making this happen while pursuing its expansion on a global scale.”

NESSI puts service oriented architectures (SOA) and Grid technologies into the broader context of a complete technology stack that includes infrastructure, service integration, semantics and knowledge.

ObjectWeb launched in June 2004 a market driven initiative, called the “ESB initiative”, intended to let vendors build offerings relating to SOA and based on open source middleware. ObjectWeb architects see Grid as the next step in the virtualization of enterprise software nfrastructures.

In March 2000, the heads of States and Governments of the European Union agreed on the Lisbon Agenda to make the EU “the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-driven economy by 2010″. Information and Communication were identified as playing a key role in achieving the Lisbon goals.

NESSI was jointly founded by Atos Origin, BT, Engineering, HP, IBM, Nokia, ObjectWeb, SAP, Siemens, Software AG, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, and Thales. It was officially presented on September 7, 2005 in Brussels, Belgium, in the presence of Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Information Society and Media.
